The Department of Clinical & Diagnostic Services (C&DS) is a core technical department of the FCT Hospitals Management Board (HMB), headed by a Director. The Department provides strategic leadership, coordination, and oversight of clinical and diagnostic services across all FCT HMB hospitals, ensuring the delivery of safe, quality, evidence-based, and patient-centered healthcare in line with established standards and best practices.

The Department is responsible for developing and implementing clinical policies, coordinating clinical governance, monitoring service delivery, promoting quality assurance, and strengthening the capacity of healthcare professionals. It also oversees the FCTA postgraduate medical education through Residency Training Programs in eight specialties; including Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Ophthalmology, Anaesthesia, General Surgery, Paediatrics, and Psychiatry. In addition, it coordinates Housemanship Training for medical doctors and Internship Training Programs in; Medical laboratory science,  Physiotherapy, Radiography, Optometry, Dental Therapy, and Dental Technology, contributing significantly to healthcare workforce development.

Medical laboratory unit have four ISO 15189:2022 accredited laboratories, these are located in the following District and General Hospital; Asokoro, Maitama, Wuse and Bwari.

The Department comprises two main divisions:

  1. Clinical Services Division, consisting of the Medical Services, Medical Records, Dental Services, Physiotherapy, Optometry, Nutrition/Dietetics, and Biomedical Engineering Units.

 

  1. Diagnostic Services Division, comprising the Medical Laboratory Services, Radiological Services, and Histopathology/Mortuary Services Units.

Working closely with Medical Directors, departmental heads, and other stakeholders, the Department remains committed to strengthening clinical governance, enhancing service quality, and ensuring efficient, accessible, and high-quality secondary healthcare services across the FCT hospital system.
