DEPARTMENT OF NURSING SERVICES HOSPITALS MANAGEMENT BOARD, FEDERAL CAPITAL TERRITORY ADMINISTRATION.

The activities of the department are divided into four (4) units and are all being supervise by the Director Nursing Services (HMB):

i. Administration,

ii. Clinical Services,

iv. Quality Assurance, Mentoring and Inspection.

The Administration unit of the department is charge with;

  • Plan and oversee all the departmental budgetary activities such as the Annual Operational Plan for the nurses, nominal roll of all Nurses and Auxiliary staff.
  • Succession planning, submission of the list for recruitment and deployment of Nurses and NYSC members.
  • Plan and conduct orientation program for newly employed Nurses.
  • Handling the welfare needs of all the Nurses, through collaboration with the Hospitals management leaders.
  • Ensure industrial harmony and resolution of legal issues affecting the Nurses.
  • Enforcement of professional code of conduct and discipline among the Nurses.
  • Oversee Annual Performance Evaluation Rating (APER) forms.
  • Attend to all annual leave matters, distribution of staff, transfer etc. concerning nurses working under the board.

The Clinical Services unit: This unit takes charge of supervision of all Nursing activities in the entire FCTA Hospitals to ensure that qualitative and effective health care services are being rendered to FCT residents and its environs.

  • Setting and outlining of Nursing procedures/activities for rendering qualitative health care to the clients/patients through standardized Nursing care plan.
  • Monthly compilation and analysis of progress report from the entire FCTA Hospitals for proper planning and resolution of issues where necessary.
  • Resolution of misconception or misunderstanding that arises among the Nursing staff, other health workers, patients and their relatives.
  • Proper collaboration between the Hospitals and the Department to ensure the required working equipment/tools are provided for service improvement.
  • Good coordination of all the students from various training institutions during their periodic clinical posting to FCTA Hospitals.
  • Available man power is judiciously distributed, utilized and weekly ward rosters are scrutinized.

Quality Assurance, Mentoring and Evaluation unit; This unit takes charge of the following tasks in the department.

  • Professional licenses verifications to ensure that Nurses practicing license are updated through mandatory continues professional development programs (MCPDP) to avoid quackery in the system.
  • Maintenance of professional standard to avoid litigation by routine assessment and monitoring of nursing activities (Nursing Audit) in the Hospitals.
  • Monitoring the Hospitals compliances to infection/control principles and medical waste management policies.
  • Participating in the activities of FCT Nursing and Midwifery Council Committee to ensure standard of practice are maintained in all the Hospitals in FCT.

Training, Education, Mentoring, and Research Development; this unit is charge with the following tasks

  • Routine planning for staff capacity building/career development by identifying the training needs of the staff and the Hospital service’s needs.
  • Eligible staff for specialty courses and other educational programs are routinely identified and properly screened for the training.
  • Proper record keeping of short-listed staff on long and short-term training.
  • Monitoring staff for active participation in MCPDP.
  • Research knowledge dissemination to ensure evidence-based practice in Nursing Care
  • Organization of Induction training for the newly employed Nurses
  • Scrutinizing the Nurse Interns credentials for temporary employment
  • Orientation and supervision of Interns posted to the accredited hospitals
